The Process of Tikkun: Understanding the Roles of Mashiach ben Yosef and Mashiach ben David

What is the role of Mashiach? Mashiach does not simply arrive to rescue an otherwise unchanged world. Mashiach himself participates in the cosmic process of descent and ascent. He enters the places of concealment, confronts the qelipot, retrieves the fallen sparks, rectifies the damaged vessels, joins what has been separated, and transforms the material world into a vessel capable of receiving Divine light.

The two Messiahs embody complementary dimensions of this process. Mashiach ben Yosef supplies the force of ascent, struggle, preparation, and the rectification of Yesod; Mashiach ben David supplies the power of love, kingship, inner rectification, and the recovery of what has been swallowed by the qelipot. Each strengthens the other until the “two eyes” of the Bride are opened together.

Only after this hidden work is completed does the public redemption emerge. The final function of Mashiach is therefore not merely to end exile, but to bring creation from שבירה (shevirah, brokenness) through בירור (birur, refinement) into תיקון (tikkun, rectification), and from tikkun into ייחוד (yichud, Divine unity)—until both “man and beast” are redeemed and “the earth is filled with knowledge of HaShem as the waters cover the sea.”
