Torah Parashat

2025-2026
Hebrew Year 5786
The Torah is the written collection of God’s word, containing its central laws, teachings, and sacred wisdom. The weekly Torah portion—Parshat HaShavuah (also spelled Parashat HaShavuah)—refers to the cycle of readings from the Torah that are divided into 54 individual portions. Each portion is named after the first word or words of the passage and is assigned to a specific week of the year.
The Torah itself is part of the Tanach, or Hebrew Bible—known in Christianity as the Old Testament. “Tanach” is an acronym for Torah (Law), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). The annual cycle of Torah reading begins and ends on Simchat Torah, the joyful holiday that celebrates the completion—and immediate restarting—of the Torah reading cycle. According to Jewish tradition, the Torah is the written word of God and contains the foundational laws and teachings of Judaism. These include guidance on food, relationships, clothing, ethical living, spiritual practices, and sacred observances—forming the heart of Jewish life.
One of the beautiful reasons we study the Torah in weekly portions is because of the spiritual and mental nature of the human being. Learning in measured portions allows us to thoughtfully absorb and digest what we are studying at a balanced pace. Rather than overwhelming ourselves with too much at once, we are invited into a steady rhythm of reflection, growth, and integration.

You may have heard rabbis and teachers describe the weekly Torah portion as “Daily Manna,” “Doses of Torah,” or “Bite-sized spiritual nourishment.” Each week offers something new—an insight, a message, or a gentle nudge from Hashem that feels especially relevant to that moment in time. The Torah readings often align beautifully with the Hebrew calendar. For example, the portions studied around Passover frequently connect to themes of freedom and preparation, mirroring both the physical season and the spiritual work we are doing.
The same is true for the readings surrounding Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Time and again, it feels as though the Torah portions align with the Hebrew calendar in a deeply intentional way—just as Hashem designed. Studying in weekly portions allows us to remain spiritually in step with our Creator and with the sacred rhythm of the year.

There is even a tradition that one’s birthdate holds spiritual significance, corresponding to a personal life purpose reflected in the Torah portion of the week in which one was born. This is why, at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a young person reads from the Torah portion connected to their birthday week—stepping into their place within the unfolding story of Torah.

How beautiful and profound this is. Some may say that everything happens by chance. Yet within our tradition, we recognize Hashem as the Author and Master Architect of all creation. In His love for us, He guides our paths, plants desires within our hearts, and gives us a blueprint for living through the Torah.

Baruch Hashem for such a loving Creator.
